Big City vs. Great Outdoors: Where is Best to Bike?

by Lisa Sitwell 10 Jan 2020 0 Comments

Biking is one of the best ways to see the world around you. You can ride your bike for exercise, for sport, or for fun. Bike enthusiasts usually have a preference as to city or out-of-the-city biking. There are differences to consider between the two settings.

The Great Outdoors

One of the best reasons to ride in the great outdoors is that there are many options for you. You can ride on the street or off-road in dirt. The scenery when biking in the great outdoors can show you the four seasons at their most beautiful. You can experience life at a slower pace when out of the city, taking the time to let your surroundings envelop you.

While there is more of a chance of an accident in the city, biking in the great outdoors can leave you without cell reception or nearby help if it is needed. If you are biking with a group, someone may have a tire or medical necessities that you don't have in a minor situation. In the case of a major accident, you might not be able to get immediate help. Try not to bike alone in remote areas. If you do, make sure someone knows where you are.

The City

City biking can be beneficial for people who live in areas with larger populations. If you live and work in a city, biking can be the easiest and most economical way for you to get to and from work as well as around town. You don't even need to own your own bike in the city. Many people choose to rent an electric bike, return it when their day is over, and do it again the next time they need to get around the city.

A helmet is advised whenever riding a bike, but especially in the city. The more cars around, the more of a chance of an accident. Even cities with bike lanes are not always safer. City bike riding is notorious for forcing the bicyclists to inhale car fumes and other pollution of the city. Some people wear masks or scarves over their nose and mouth to cut down on inhaling toxic air.

Biking is a way to see the world like no other mode of travel can provide. Whatever type of biking suits you, whether in the city or the great outdoors, you will be getting exercise either way. Make sure to keep your eyes on the road, but also enjoy the scenery along the way.
